Design Thinking: A Catalyst for Transformation in Education

A Summary of the Presentation by Dr Sai Prakash Leo Muthu – CEO, Sairam Institutions during the First National Conclave on Design Thinking

Dr. Sai Prakash Leo Muthu’s address at the First National Conclave on Design Thinking highlighted a critical aspect of innovation: the pivotal role of students. Sairam Institutions has successfully cultivated a student body that is at the core of its innovation ecosystem.

‘’Founded on the principle of building a better nation through quality education, Sairam has integrated the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into its core mission. This commitment to global citizenship is evident in the institution’s focus on social innovation and its aspiration to bring urban amenities to rural India.

Three individuals have had a profound impact on Indian society:

  • Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam: He inspired people to dream big and achieve their goals.
  • Dr. C. Subramaniam: He set ambitious goals and worked tirelessly to achieve them.
  • Mother Teresa: She embodied the spirit of humanity and service.

Dr. Saiprakash discussed their focus on social innovation. He said they believed in creating solutions that benefit society, especially considering that 70% of India’s population still resides in rural areas. The institution is working towards providing urban amenities to rural India, fulfilling the vision of Dr. Kalam.

To achieve this, we have created a culture of positivity and collaboration. We have instilled a sense of purpose and passion in our students and faculty, encouraging them to persevere and work towards ambitious goals. The National Education Policy (NEP) has provided a framework for this holistic approach to education.

Dr. Saiprakash emphasized on various initiatives to inspire the students and faculty, improve processes, and instill a sense of purpose. These include:

  • Adopting the “You Must” principles: This framework emphasizes social responsibility, entrepreneurship, and evidence-based decision-making.
  • Utilizing the “FITD” (Foot in the door) methodology: This encourages students to feel the problem, imagine a solution, do a prototype, and then share it with others.
  • Creating an innovation ecosystem: We have implemented a four-year program where students ideate, design, innovate, and finally inspire others with their projects.
  • Focusing on holistic development: We have introduced the BGP (Beyond Grade Point) system, which recognizes students’ achievements in innovation, sports, and cultural activities.
  • Providing opportunities for collaboration: We have established interdisciplinary projects and encourage students to connect and learn from each other.
  • Upskilling Faculty: We provide our faculty with access to Coursera certifications and training in Design Thinking.
  • Promoting entrepreneurship: We have established a techno-incubator foundation and have seen a significant increase in student startups and patents.

Sairam’s focus on interdisciplinary projects and collaboration has also been instrumental in empowering students. By working together on real-world challenges, students develop essential skills such as teamwork, communication, and critical thinking. These experiences equip them to become future leaders capable of addressing complex problems.’’

In conclusion, Dr. Saiprakash’s presentation provided the journey of Sairam Institutions that exemplifies the transformative power of Design Thinking. By placing students at the centre of the learning experience and aligning its mission with societal needs, the institution has created a model that other educational institutions can aspire to emulate.

About the First National Conclave on Design Thinking

The School of Design Thinking and Intellect Design Arena hosted the First National Conclave on Design Thinking on March 27, 2024. The conclave provided a platform for participants (Vice Chancellors, Directors and Deans) from across Universities to come together and understand the different perspectives of the academic world on Design Thinking and its application. The event was graced by Prof. (Dr.)T G Sitharam, Chairman, AICTE, as the Chief Guest.

The key highlight of the event was the launch of the ‘Academia Nxt’ partnership program – a dedicated program for universities and colleges to help shift the mental model of students and faculties – leading to learning excellence and talent development. The partnership provides the higher education institutions an avenue to create a culture of Design Thinking in the campus through various contextual and composable initiatives.
